Death of a Neighbor:
Local Reaction to FDR's Passing on the 75th Anniversary

Dutchess County Historical Society Annual Meeting

Thursday, April 16.
Meeting at 6:00 (all welcome, but only members may vote). “Death of a Neighbor” talk at 6:30.
FDR Library & Museum, Wallace Center, Hyde Park.

Speaker: Michael Dolan, DCHS Vice President.

FDR was known around the world as an icon representing steadfast leadership and defense of the free world.  But to many in Hyde Park and Dutchess County, he was a neighbor, someone they saw as a child grow into an adolescent and adulthood. To them, his well-kept secret struggle with polio was well known. We see, and hear (from radio broadcasts at the time), how these neighbors and friends experience his passing.

The event is FREE but an online RSVP here is appreciated!

Women’s Voices & Talents:
Local Progressive Women Take Action

Thursday, May 14
7 pm. FDR Library & Museum, Wallace Center, Hyde Park.

Speakers: Melodye Moore, Chair DCHS Collections, Bill Jeffway, DCHS Executive Director.

We explore the path of local women across the 72 year period of the organized effort to achieve women’s suffrage in the US. Starting with the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and ending with the August 1920 adoption of a US Constitutional Amendment, there were many steps in between. We profile two progressive women in particular, a granddaughter and grandmother. The younger woman’s life is cut short by the flu pandemic of 1918, while the older woman remains an activist until her death at approaching a century.
