This exhibition focuses on the art and life of one of the Hudson Valley’s first professional female artists,Caroline Morgan Clowes (1838-1904). Featuring 25 of her paintings alongside dozens of objects from the artist’s extensive archive—sketches, family letters, and other ephemera—Fertile Ground examines Clowes’ early life in LaGrange, New York; her budding professionalism in New York City; and her mature practice as a financially successful artist. Her delicately rendered and heartwarming genre paintings of sheep, cows, horses, chickens, and dogs offer a glimpse into the lives of Hudson Valley’s nineteenth-century residents.
