We are fortunate the William Clowes, in September of 1856, looked back and wrote about the period of time when he had just moved to Orange and Sullivan County. He explains why, despite having lost his wife, the mother of his two surviving children, he was away from home for so much time.

Determinted to make money in a number of ways from the deep forests he owned, he invented what he called “The Indispensible.”
