Historic Dutchess Vantage Points

This is an experimental, exploratory concept led by the Dutchess County Historical Society in partnership with its local city, town and village Vice Presidents, and potentially others. Currently very limited, and fixed with little to no data, we are exploring the potential of the map to be able to tell stories of the viewer's choosing. Based on the authentic and compelling history of Dutchess County. Stories might include:

Service: how men, women and even children get called to national service...

Getting from point A to B: Turnpikes & Shunpikes, from wooden plank roads to railroads and canals, how transportation transformed the lives of county residents...

Quakers: how the pursuit of the humble and plain made them stand out brightly...

Dutchess as breadbasket: basic sustenance and health? Pure commercial venture? Social movement? All of the above?

The rise of women's voices and participation: an evolutionary, sometimes revolutionary, path to today...

African Americans: Large, pre-Civil War rural Dutchess communities, where are they today?

ETC.
