Over the course of the year in 1895, the Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle profiled 17 Churches in their Saturday edition. They are shared here. We have added the AME Zion Methodist Church which existed, but was overlooked at the time. And are developing a profile of the Jewish Synagogue which was also active, but not profiled.
The underlying map is from 21 years earlier, 1874, so there are some discrepancies which are noted. The map has the advantage of depicting individual buildings and had an index of churches, making it a good foundation.
The story of the churches is a complex one. Many of these organizations operated from different buildings over time on the same site, or at different sites. While taking an 1895 snapshot helps simplify complex activity over centuries, it of course limits the broader understanding. We hope to develop such broader profiles over time.
Poughkeepsie's AME Zion Church has operated continually since 1840
