The Life & Work of Caroline Morgan Clowes
"Saving Miss Clowes" is a campaign to raise $20,000 to restore 19 paintings, and through exhibitions both physical, and online, to restore Miss Clowes legacy
We have raised $12,000.
Attic finds of this importance just don't happen anymore
Not only has a lost 19th century Dutchess County artist of national renown been found, but the artist was that very rare species in the field at the time: a woman. Furthermore, her paintings depict the rural farm animals we see every day in Dutchess County.
When Linda Hubbard took on the task of organizing the family home of over 180 years, she made an amazing discovery.
Having heard about a number of woman artists in the family, Linda was not surprised to start finding canvases and sketches. But within the trunks of cousin Caroline Morgan Clowes, she came across the thick, blocky catalogue of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. There, in coveted Gallery C at the main entrance of the main gallery, she saw her cousin’s name literally surrounded by the names of Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, J. F. Kensett, George H. Smillie, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer.
That’s when Linda realized that the story of her cousin’s achievements, like many women who step successfully out of traditional roles, were greatly underplayed.
Announcing Campaign to Raise $20,000 for the C. M. Clowes Art & Legacy Preservation Fund
We are looking to secure funding for the professional restoration of 16 paintings that had remained in Miss Clowes personal and family collection, the creation of archival digital files, county-wide exhibition in prime locations during 2020 and beyond, permanent online exhibition.
The exhibition will be called "Caroline: The Woman Behind The Artist C. M. Clowes." Announcement of exhibition schedule and first reveal of restored paintings will take place in January 2020.
To-date there has been an enormous investment in research and some restoration. Three paintings have been restored: Buckskin, the Horse that served in the Civil War; Autumn; Sheep and Chickens.
