Caroline’s parents, William J. Clowes (1802-1881) and Elizabeth Ann Nichols (1809-1840) had three children. Lydia in 1836. Caroline in 1838. And Ellen in 1840. Her mother, Elizabeth, died on Christmas Eve, 1840, having just written a letter to each of her three children aware she was dying. Infant Ellen died a few months later.
Caroline and her sister Lydia were raised by their single-parent father until Caroline was 13 and the sisters were split up. Lydia was taken in my a cousin in Virginia. Caroline by her late mother’s brother and his wife in LaGrange.
