Descriptions of Paintings by Caroline M. Clowes

Cardinal Bird and Yellow Jasmine [After 1867]

Painting

View of a central red cardinal (male) set in a wooded environment with yellow jasmine flowers. In the foreground on the left is a large fan-like piece of vegetation. On the right there is another fanlike-plant that is much smaller. At the center is a branch that extends upwards and forks into two smaller branches. On the top of this branch perches the cardinal, who faces in profile toward the right, with its head slightly lifted, and its beak slightly open. Attached to this branch is another smaller branch that snakes around it, with yellow flowers that bloom at the ends of the branch. These flowers extend upwards toward the upper left corner, and downwards into the foreground. To the left, above the large fan-like plant, is a large tree trunk, which also has jasmine snaking around it. Above the cardinal is another section of green leaves that frame the bird. In the background, there is a grassy ground, with a forest made up of many tall trees.

Ducks and Chicken [No date]

Painting

There are two small paintings that seem to coordinate with this description, one with just chickens, and the other with ducks. Unsure if this name/title fits both of these paintings, or refers to another painting entirely. The painting with the chickens depicts a set of stairs on the left side that descend to a flat area in the center, and what appears to be a barred chicken enclosure with a small opening on the right. The wall on the left has one small chain hanging. On the ground, in the center is one large black chicken and five small chicks that peck at the ground. On the right, a white and black chicken exists the coop or enclosure. On the left, a rooster stands on the stairs, with its body angled toward the ground as well. The painting with the ducks is set outdoors, with a small body of water. In the foreground is this water. On the right is the bank, with two different kinds of vegetation, and two ducks. The duck closer to the viewer faces in profile to the left, with its head lowered to drink. The duck behind also stands in profile, with its head angled upwards. To the left are two more reclining ducks, and another piece of flowering vegetation. In the background there is a rise of the ground, potentially a hill. Behind this is the blue and white sky.

Evensong [No date]

Painting

View of sheep reclining in the roots of a gnarled tree. In the foreground is grass and a section of root. In the middle ground, at the center of the composition, are two sheep reclining. The one on the left faces in profile to the left, with its head lifted up and resting on the root behind it. To its right is another sheep that is nestled next to its companion, with its body facing toward the left, and its head turned in profile to the right. These two central sheep are cornered off by the large roots, but behind these roots to the left, is more open grass, and two more sheep which face away from the viewer. To the right are more small branches/roots from the tree, and grass. In the background, the main section of the tree trunk lays out horizontally, with a small bird perched at its center, directly above the two central sheep. In the left section of the composition, there are the leaves and branches from the top of the tree, and the suggestion of further sheep reclining in the grass. The sky is blue with slight, white clouds.

Hidden Calf in the Pinewoods [1895]

Painting

View of a wooded landscape with a young cow standing at its edge. In the foreground of the composition are small grasses, and larger fan-like plants on the left. There is a large tree trunk on the right side, with flowers at its base, and a climbing vine with flowers (potentially jasmine like Cardinal Bird and Yellow Jasmine). Slightly to the left of center is a young brown and white spotted calf, who stands in profile facing the right, with its head turned directly toward the viewer. On the left behind the cow is another large tree trunk, as well as more vegetation. On the right toward the background is the indication of another reddish colored cow. The rest of the background is made up of more of these tall trees.

Lambs [No date]

Painting

View of two young sheep set within the trunk of tree, and the rise of a hill. In the foreground is grass, and a few small light colored flowers. At the center of the composition in the middle ground are the two lambs. The one of the left reclines with its body in profile, facing the right, while its head faces directly towards the viewer. The sheep on the right stands, angled away from the viewer with its head resting upwards on the roots of the tree. Behind the lambs on the left side is a large tree trunk, whose roots reach slightly toward the center. On this trunk is a climbing vine that reaches upwards, and toward the standing sheep that reaches to graze on its leaves. On the right, is the grass, which extends from the trunk above the lambs, down to the right, and into the foreground. The ground rises into an incline/hill on top of the lambs.

The Challenge, Dick and Bingo [1859]

Painting

View of a cat and a dog set in a domestic interior. On the left side of the composition is a piece of furniture covered in a velvet-like, dark green fabric, potentially a chair. On this furniture sits a white cat, whose body is angled slightly toward the viewer. Its ears are back (in annoyance) and its front paw is lifted. To the right in the foreground is a black and white dog, who faces toward the left toward the cat. One of its front paws is lifted at the cat, while is other is hooked on to the furniture. In the background, behind the dog, is a table covered by a red cloth. Placed on this table is a basket filled with what appears to be more fabric. The two halves of color creates a division between the side of the composition with the dog, and that of the cat.

Three Cows at the Mouth of Deep Creek, Florida [After 1867]

To the left of the leftmost cow is a large tree trunk, with branches that extend toward the right with leaves, and moss that hands downwards. In the background, on the left are more trees, and on the right a section of water. Far into the background of this water is a boat with two (possibly three) human figures sitting within it. To the right are more trees, and furthest into the background is another section of land, potentially a large hill.

The cow on the left is a reddish brown, and it stands facing the viewer, with its head twisted in profile to the right. The right cow is white, with its body facing toward the viewer, and its head leaning down to drink from the creek. To the right of the white cow is a tall flowering, purple, plant. Along the cow's body are numbers that correspond to notes made in the lower section of the paper that detail the coloring of the cow. In the head, there is an x, 2, and another symbol. On the upper neck is another x, while the tail includes a 1. The bottom section of writing reads: "11 o'clock, March 30th 1867 / x paint of highest light / 1 orange tint, where the hair parts / 2, here the red, fades into a (?) - The red very dark".

There is a large rock that slopes upwards from the water. There is a large tree whose branches extend toward the right over the water, and have green, yellow, and reddish coloring. Behind this tree in the background are more trees, also with red, yellow, and brown coloring. On the right side in the background is the other bank, which is obscured by haze or fog. There are more trees, and the suggestion of further hills or mountains.

On the right above these figures is a slight elevation that slopes down toward the center of the composition. On the top of this elevation are more animals, including a small goat, a cow that appears to bellow with its mouth open, facing the left, and two horses. The rightmost edge is made up of a tree and three sheep that recline on the lower part of the elevation. The sky is indicated by light shading marks.
