Two Cows at The Wappinger Creek [1882]

Painting

View of two cows set in a landscape with a small creek, a grassy field, and trees. In the foreground of the composition is a small creek that one of the two cows leans down to drink from. On the right side of the foreground is a large tree trunk. In the center of the middle ground are the two cows. The cow on the left is a reddish brown, and it stands facing the viewer, with its head twisted in profile to the right. The right cow is white, with its body facing toward the viewer, and its head leaning down to drink from the creek. To the right of the white cow is a tall flowering, purple, plant. In the background there are more grasses and flowering plants, and the suggestion of the edge of a forest, with many trees. In the left corner is the blue sky, with no clouds.
