Poughkeepsie, NY – July 27, 2024 – The Poughkeepsie Riverfront Partnership, in collaboration with Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum and Poughkeepsie Public Arts Commission, is thrilled to announce the debut production of The Fateful Hour, a thrilling recreation of the role Poughkeepsie played in the ratification of the United States Constitution and the creation of the Bill of Rights. The Fateful Hour will premiere on Saturday, September 14, from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at Upper Landing Park, Poughkeepsie. The event is free and open to the public.
“Writing the play was a joy, in that we have a great team, and I am fond of local history, particularly New York’s adoption of the US Constitution in 1788 when Poughkeepsie was New York’s capitol,” said Judge Al Rosenblatt, playwright of The Fateful Hour. “There is a lot of drama in the event, not to mention its national importance.”
“We may not often think about it, but when it comes to local history, our cup runneth over!” declared Roger Hendricks Simon, director of The Fateful Hour. “Indeed, if the historical events dramatized in Albert Rosenblatt’s play The Fateful Hour hadn’t occurred, we wouldn’t even have a nation as we know it today. But surprisingly not much has really changed since 1788. Then as now there may be too much negativity in our world. But if you look around you can definitely feel and see something really good happening right here in our own backyard. This play reminds us to celebrate and renew that energy and spirit. Thanks to Mayor Flowers and a lot of hard working and talented people in our backyard we’re on the move again, Poughkeepsie!”

About the playwright: Albert Rosenblatt was County Judge of Dutchess County and then served as a judge of New York’s high court, the Court of Appeals, and now teaches at NYU Law School. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School, and lives in La Grange with his wife, Julia.
About the director: Roger Hendricks Simon is the Artistic Director of The Simon Studio. His major film roles include Love in Kilnerry, Linoleum (opposite Jim Gaffigan and Tony Shalhoub), and Dan Simon’s Another Year Together. Off Broadway lead roles include Deb Margolin’s This is Not a Time for Peace and Bill Cosgriff’s Love, Sex, and Real Estate.
