Our understanding of free Black communities that emerged before, during and after the Civil War is greatly expanding. We can start to discern what might be called a Black-led Underground Railroad, the fundamental importance of property ownership to political, social and economic advancement, and the dual benefit of helping non-locals find freedom, and local free Blacks, protect their freedom from kidnapping.
