As this beautiful print from the late 1700s of Upper Landing at Poughkeepsie shows, the first item of business for new settlers was to build a saw mill, so the land could be cleared for agriculture, and the wood could be used to construct homes, and to create charcoal in the important local process at the time of creating iron.
